What is the UN Security Council?
The United Nations Security Council is said to be the most important part of the United Nations. It is responsible for maintaining peace and security at the international level. The United Nations Security Council can impose international sanctions on any country. It can take military action against any country. If the UN Security Council issues a proposal, then the rest of the countries of the United Nations have to convince it. The United Nations Security Council i.e. UNSC has a total of 15 member countries. Out of which 5 are permanent countries. While 10 keep joining on a temporary basis.
Permanent members of the UN Security Council
When the United Nations was formed, five permanent members were made in its Security Council. These include Russia, the United States, France, the United Kingdom and China. These five countries are the countries that fought together and won the Second World War. All these countries have veto power. Under which they can stop any decision of the United Nations.
Why is India not getting a place?
Actually, the demand to make India a permanent member of the UN Security Council has been going on for a long time. On many occasions, other countries have also supported this. But China, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, is becoming an obstacle in India’s path. China has veto power. Whenever the demand to make India a permanent member is raised, China stops it.
Many people have other arguments regarding this. They say that India has still not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty i.e. Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and has also refused to sign the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty i.e. CTBT. This is also a reason.
At the same time, some people believe that not only India but many other countries are also in line to get a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council. These include Brazil, Japan and Germany. Therefore, it has not been decided yet whether to give a place to India or not.
