Women Voters: The Deciding Factor in Delhi’s Freebie Battle!
The statistics above clearly show that the party garnering significant support from women voters is the one forming the government. This highlights that the upcoming battle for Delhi is increasingly centered around promises of freebies rather than performance. All parties are pulling out all the stops, with a significant focus on appealing to women voters. However, in this election, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party stands out for not introducing any direct cash transfer scheme aimed at women, unlike its rivals who have made such promises central to their campaigns.
Cash transfer schemes to women can significantly influence elections but do not guarantee victory
Cash transfer schemes targeting women have emerged as a game-changer in elections, often guaranteeing significant voter support for the ruling party. Several recent elections highlight this trend:
Maharashtra
After losing the Lok Sabha elections, the Shinde government introduced a populist initiative, the Chief Minister’s Majhi Ladki Behen Yojana. This scheme provided ₹1,500 monthly assistance to women aged 21-65, with a promise to raise it to ₹2,100 if re-elected. In the 2024 assembly elections, the Mahayuti alliance won a staggering 235 out of 288 seats. A post-poll analysis by CSDS revealed that 50% of women voters supported Mahayuti, compared to just 33% for the opposition MVA, which had pledged ₹3,000 per month but lacked the credibility of delivering benefits while in power.
Jharkhand
The JMM government launched the Maiya Samman Yojana in August 2024 after its Lok Sabha defeat, offering women ₹1,000 per month, with a promise to increase it to ₹2,500 post-election. The India Alliance, led by JMM, swept the assembly elections, winning 56 out of 81 seats. CSDS data indicated that 45% of women voted for the India Alliance, while only 38% supported the NDA. Despite BJP’s promise of ₹2,100 under its Gogo Didi scheme, voters backed the government delivering tangible benefits.
Madhya Pradesh
Facing anti-incumbency, the Shivraj Singh Chauhan government launched the Ladli Behna Yojana in March 2023, initially offering ₹1,000 to women, later increased to ₹1,250. In December 2023, BJP secured a two-thirds majority, winning 163 out of 230 seats. While Congress had promised ₹1,500 monthly for women, 47% of women voters backed BJP, as per CSDS data, favoring the party already implementing the scheme.
These examples underline that direct benefit schemes for women can significantly influence electoral outcomes, especially when backed by timely execution and credibility.
