Kamala Harris: If the US Democratic Party chooses US Vice President Kamala Harris as its presidential candidate at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago in August, it will be only the second time in more than two centuries of American democracy that American voters will be able to choose whether they will choose a woman to lead them or not. They have elected only one black president, Barack Obama, but never a woman. If Kamala Harris is elected president, she will not only pass the toughest test in American politics, but she will also become the first Indian American, first Asian, first black woman and first person of Jamaican origin to reach this position.

A CNN report says that to ensure that this possibility becomes a reality, Harris supporters have started sending donations to the Democratic Party. The CNN report also revealed that there has been a major shift in funding for the Democrats since US President Joe Biden withdrew from the race. An adviser to Harris told the Washington Post that Kamala Harris’ opponents in the party are also opening their pockets to contribute to her campaign.
Kamala Harris Surpasses Trump in Fundraising Surge: $100 Million Raised After Biden’s Withdrawal
Donations are pouring in ActBlue, a fundraising platform for the Democratic Party, reported raising nearly $47 million in just seven hours after Biden’s announcement on Sunday. The newspaper revealed that during Sunday and Monday, the platform recorded donations of nearly $67 million in total for all candidates and causes.
Harris’ campaign reported raising $100 million across all its fundraising committees between Sunday and Monday evening. That’s much more than the $53 million raised by Trump’s campaign after he pleaded guilty in May in a Manhattan business fraud case. According to Harris’ campaign, more than 1.1 million donors contributed to it, 62 percent of whom were first-time donors in this election cycle.
Will it be enough?
A Reuters/Ipsos poll found Kamala Harris has a slight two percentage point lead over Republican Donald Trump. The national survey showed Trump at 42 per cent and Harris at 44 per cent.
However, 56 per cent of voters agreed with the statement that 59-year-old Harris is mentally sharp and capable of handling challenges. While 49 per cent said the same about 78-year-old Trump. However, this has not affected Trump, who believes that defeating Kamala Harris will be ‘easy.’
