CBSE launches On-Screen Marking for Class 12 exams

The CBSE will implement On-Screen Marking (OSM) for Class 12 answer sheets starting from the 2026 exams, aiming for a faster, more accurate and transparent evaluation. Exams begin February 17. CBSE informed all affiliated schools about the change through a letter dated February 9.  Under the new system, answer sheets will be scanned and checked on a computer screen instead of being physically sent to examiners. According to CBSE, this will remove common errors such as mistakes in totalling marks. The system will automatically calculate marks, which will reduce manual mistakes.

The board also said that this will save time and money spent on transporting answer sheets. Since marks will be calculated digitally, there will be no need for post-result verification of totalling errors. This will reduce the workload on staff and speed up final result processing.

CBSE has described the new system as environmentally friendly. It will reduce the use of paper and transportation, making the process more sustainable. Teachers from all affiliated schools in India and abroad will be able to participate in the evaluation process.

To prepare for the change, CBSE has asked schools to ensure proper infrastructure. Schools must have a computer lab with a Public Static IP, as per affiliation rules. Computers or laptops should have Windows 8 or above, at least 4 GB RAM, and 1 GB free space on the C drive. Schools must install updated internet browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Internet Explorer, or Firefox. Adobe Reader must also be available. A stable internet connection with a minimum speed of 2 Mbps and an uninterrupted power supply is required for smooth functioning.

A call centre will be set up to solve technical issues. Instructional videos will be released to explain how the system works. CBSE said detailed guidelines will be shared separately to ensure that schools complete preparations on time.

The board clarified that the purpose of this communication is to inform schools and to instruct them to review the requirements, upgrade their infrastructure as necessary, and ensure all preparations for the new digital marking system are completed before the 2026 exams. However, the Class 10 answer sheets will still be checked physically in 2026. The board conducts Class 10 and Class 12 exams every year in India and in 26 other countries. Nearly 46 lakh students appear for these exams annually.
