Sri Lankan police repatriate 125 telecom fraud suspects to China

Sri Lankan police have repatriated 125 suspected criminals back to China for their involvement in telecom fraud, the Chinese Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said on Thursday. The suspected criminals had been apprehended during earlier crackdown operations.

These suspects were repatriated on March 29 with the support of the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka and Chinese police, according to the MPS. The joint operation was a result of deepened international law enforcement cooperation between Chinese and Sri Lankan police to intensify crackdown efforts on cross-border telecom fraud, the MPS said.

China’s security officials claim to have “completely dismantled” telecom fraud networks in Myanmar and Cambodia. Thousands of people in India, China and several other countries were defrauded by these gangs operating on the Thai-Myanmar border and in Cambodia.
