Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated sharply on Monday as Tehran warned Washington to accept its latest 14-point peace proposal or face “failure,” while US President Donald Trump rejected the offer, calling it a “piece of garbage.”
The diplomatic standoff comes amid worsening instability in the Gulf region, where shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed significantly and global oil prices have surged past $100 per barrel amid fears of supply disruption.
Iranian negotiators said the proposal seeks an end to hostilities, lifting of sanctions, restoration of frozen assets, and changes to military deployments in the region. However, US President Donald Trump dismissed the offer outright, saying it was “totally unacceptable” and accusing Tehran of undermining negotiations.
Trump also warned that the fragile ceasefire, already under strain, was on “life support” and hinted at further strategic decisions depending on Iran’s next move.
Meanwhile, Gulf tensions intensified further after Kuwait accused Iran’s Revolutionary Guard of attempting an infiltration operation on Bubiyan Island, a strategically important area linked to major port infrastructure projects. Iran has not officially responded to the allegation.
Regional instability has also affected maritime traffic, with several ships reportedly avoiding the Strait of Hormuz or operating with tracking systems turned off due to security concerns.
In parallel developments, diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes, with countries such as Qatar attempting to mediate between the two sides and prevent a full-scale escalation.
The ongoing crisis has raised global concerns over energy security, trade disruptions, and the possibility of wider regional conflict if negotiations collapse.
