There is welcome news for the lakhs of construction workers employed in Delhi. The Delhi government has approved the ‘Delhi Building and Other Construction Workers Health Scheme.’ Under this scheme, registered construction workers and their family members will now receive cashless medical treatment worth up to ₹10 lakh. This means they will not have to spend money out-of-pocket for hospital treatment. The scheme will be particularly beneficial for workers who operate in hazardous environments daily. The government states that this initiative will ensure better healthcare facilities for workers and their families.
Who will benefit from the scheme?
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, over 2.7 lakh registered construction workers in Delhi will benefit from this scheme. Additionally, their family members—including spouses, children, and parents—will also be covered.
What is the limit for free treatment?
Under the scheme, every registered construction worker is entitled to free medical treatment worth up to ₹2 lakh. For the entire family, the coverage extends up to a maximum of ₹10 lakh per year. A key feature is that the treatment will be entirely cashless; beneficiaries will not need to pay out-of-pocket during hospitalization or treatment.
What facilities are included in the scheme?
The government has incorporated various healthcare facilities into the scheme. Workers and their families will have access to both OPD (Outpatient Department) and IPD (Inpatient Department) services.
Furthermore, the scheme covers medical examinations, lab tests, emergency treatment, and referral facilities when required.
Free annual health check-ups will also be conducted for workers and their spouses. This will facilitate early detection of illnesses and ensure timely treatment.
Bringing healthcare to the workers
The government will deploy mobile medical units at construction sites and in areas with high concentrations of workers. These units will provide healthcare services directly to the workers. Additionally, digital health records will be created for all beneficiaries, ensuring that treatment history is securely maintained and making it easier to monitor the scheme. In this context, this scheme by the Delhi government is being viewed as a major step towards providing better medical treatment, financial security, and health-related facilities to workers and their families.
