CG News: Process to implement UCC in Chhattisgarh accelerates; Sai government forms a 5-member high-level committee.

CG News: The Chhattisgarh state government is moving towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The Sai government has constituted a five-member high-level committee to study the UCC and prepare a draft for the state.

The General Administration Department issued an order regarding the formation of this committee on Thursday, June 25. Former Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai has been appointed to chair the committee. Shatrughna Singh, MK Raut, Mohan Pawar, and Jyoti Rani Singh have been appointed as members.

The government-constituted committee will prepare a draft for the UCC in the state. To achieve this, the committee will study the personal laws of all religions and provide recommendations.

Committee to review laws related to civil matters
The primary task of the committee formed for the UCC in the state will be to study the feasibility of implementing the Uniform Civil Code. To this end, the committee will review existing laws concerning marriage, divorce, maintenance, inheritance, adoption, and other civil matters. Furthermore, recommendations will be formulated while keeping the interests of all communities and sections of society in mind.

Suggestions to be sought from experts and the public
The state government has entrusted the committee with the responsibility of gathering suggestions from all citizens, social organizations, legal experts, and other stakeholders. Additionally, the committee will study the systems in states where the UCC has already been implemented or where initiatives to implement it are underway.

The committee will prepare a draft of recommendations and submit it to the state government. It will also provide necessary legislative and administrative suggestions. CM Sai stated that the government would determine the next steps regarding the UCC following a comprehensive study and consultations with all stakeholders.

Objective: Eliminating discrimination and granting equal rights to women
Once the UCC is implemented in the state, a uniform civil law will apply to all citizens. This applies regardless of an individual’s religion, caste, or community. Currently, people from different religions follow their respective religious or personal laws regarding matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance of property, adoption, and maintenance.

However, once the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is implemented, a single, uniform law will apply to all these matters. The government states that the aim of the UCC is to completely eliminate discrimination arising from disparate personal laws and to ensure equal rights for women and men.
