Railway Ministry: The Ministry of Railways has decided to fill 4,098 vacant technical posts across railway zones nationwide. The Ministry states that the objective of these appointments is to strengthen railway safety systems and enhance operational efficiency. To this end, vacancy data received from all railway zones via the Human Resource Management System (HRMS) was assessed, following which instructions to initiate the recruitment process were issued.
Appointments under this recruitment drive will be made across a total of 35 technical categories. These include several posts directly linked to railway safety and operations.

Which category has the highest number of vacancies?
According to information received from railway zones, the highest number of vacancies exists in the following categories:
Permanent Way – 845 posts
Works – 470 posts
Carriage and Wagon – 450 posts
Vacancies in other technical categories will also be filled.
When will the recruitment process begin?
The Ministry of Railways has finalized the recruitment schedule in collaboration with the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB), Bengaluru.
The Centralized Employment Notification will be issued on July 21, 2026.
Instructions have been issued to all railway zones to upload the final list of vacancies.
Compliance with SC, ST, OBC, and EWS reservation norms is mandatory while uploading vacancy details.
Has the Railways conducted recruitment previously?
Yes. Prior to this, the Ministry of Railways had issued a notification for the recruitment of 6,565 technician posts:
323 posts for Signal Technician Grade-1
6,242 posts for Technician Grade-3
Now, approval has been granted for the recruitment of an additional 4,098 technical posts.
How many Junior Engineer posts are included?
In accordance with the Ministry’s directives, these posts have also been specifically included in this recruitment drive. Junior Engineer (Signal) – 197 posts
Junior Engineer (Telecommunication) – 79 posts
What did the railway unions say?
Railway employee organizations have welcomed this decision by the Ministry. Shiv Gopal Mishra, General Secretary of the All India Railwaymen’s Federation (AIRF), stated that filling vacant posts in the safety category is a necessary step for the safety of millions of passengers.
Alok Chandra Prakash, General Secretary of the Indian Railway Signal and Telecommunication Maintainers Union, remarked that the decision to recruit for safety-category posts—which had been lying vacant for a long time—is welcome. He expressed hope that new posts would also be created in the future, considering the expansion of the railway network.
