T20 World Champion Team India in dire straits! After Ireland, they falter in England too; questions raised over Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy.

No one would have imagined that the Indian cricket team would face such a fate after winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 title. It was only in March that Team India defeated teams from across the globe to clinch the World Cup trophy for the second consecutive time; yet, the situation now is such that Ireland handed them defeats in two back-to-back matches, and a similar scenario appears to be unfolding in England. Questions are now being raised about Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy. People are questioning the BCCI’s decision to appoint Shreyas as the new captain, given his inability to make sound decisions.

Shreyas Iyer appointed new captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav

Since Shreyas Iyer took over as the new T20 captain, Team India has not won a single match. Far from winning, the team does not even appear close to a victory. Shreyas was handed the reins unnecessarily after replacing the World Cup-winning captain, Suryakumar Yadav. The difference between Surya and Shreyas is now becoming apparent. Under Shreyas’s captaincy, Team India has been starved of a win for the last five matches, though this trend predates his current stint. Even when Shreyas was captaining the Punjab team in the IPL, a losing streak began after a few initial wins and showed no signs of stopping. Combining his IPL and Team India records, Shreyas has lost 10 of the last 12 matches, with one win and one ‘no result’.

Entire Team India bowled out in record-low overs in T20 International

The situation has reached a point where Team India is struggling to score even 100 runs, let alone chase down a target of 200. In the third T20 International against England, Team India faced a target of 202 runs—a target that was not particularly daunting. The team had successfully chased down such a score before and could have done so this time as well, yet they failed to even complete their full quota of 20 overs. The entire team was bowled out for just 76 runs in 11.4 overs.

England kept scoring runs at a blistering pace while Shreyas Iyer merely looked on.

The Indian cricket team had never before been bowled out in so few overs in a T20 International. Previously, in 2015, Team India was bowled out in 17.2 overs against South Africa in Cuttack. A new record has now been set, and Shreyas Iyer can be held directly responsible for it. Even when Team India was bowling and the English batsmen were scoring runs aggressively, Shreyas was not seen interacting much with his bowlers; he simply stood by and watched the proceedings silently. If this trend continues, the day is not far off when Team India’s situation deteriorates further, and opposing teams confidently assert their dominance by defeating them.
