Prof. Mangala Kapoor: From acid attack survivor to Padma Shri—discover the story of Prof. Mangala Kapoor’s struggle and success.

Prof. Mangala Kapoor: A journey defined by silent dedication, deep scars, and a legacy of rare ragas—Professor Mangala Kapoor’s life story is not merely one of accolades, but a testament to the tenacity and indomitable spirit of the Indian cultural soul. Despite being an acid attack survivor, she did not succumb to her suffering; instead, she channeled that very pain into melody, disciplined practice, and research. Honored with the Padma Shri by the Government of India, her life proves that when one’s purpose is clear, circumstances can be conquered.

Who is Professor Mangala Kapoor?

Professor Mangala Kapoor is a distinguished scholar of Indian classical music whose life stands as a remarkable example of courage, dedication, and resolve. She is not only an accomplished music educator and researcher but also an acid attack survivor who overcame the most harrowing challenges of her life through the power of music.

Family Background

Professor Mangala Kapoor hails from a business family. She met with a life-altering tragedy while in the seventh grade; acid was thrown on her face during her childhood, causing her to lose her very identity. Her condition was so severe that she had to undergo 37 surgeries across various cities.

A Beginning Marked by Arduous Struggle

Furthermore, she suffered fractures in both thigh bones in an accident. While these events severely affected her body and face, her self-confidence, willpower, and outlook on life never wavered. Despite prolonged medical treatment and physical agony, she refused to break. Her father stood by her side. At school, children would mock her and call her names, while others were frightened by her appearance—experiences that inflicted deep emotional wounds. Although thoughts of suicide crossed her mind, she remained resilient and strong.

Mangala’s Achievements

Professor Mangala Kapoor holds gold medals in both B.Mus and M.Mus, as well as a PhD degree. Music became her anchor and gave her a reason to live. Crowds would flock to her many musical performances to hear her sing in her melodious voice. After completing her PhD, she applied for jobs, but the path was far from easy; her applications were rejected, and she was even mocked. Eventually, however, Mangala Kapoor secured a lecturer’s position at the Women’s College of BHU. She has also earned the title of “Lata Mangeshkar of Kashi.”

Mangala Kapoor Honoured with the Padma Shri

Prof. Mangala Kapoor is among those select few whose recognition represents not merely a personal achievement but also a powerful social message. While an act of inhumane violence—an acid attack—inflicted physical harm upon her, it could not break her spirit, intellect, or resolve.

For her, Indian classical music became more than just an art form; it became a means of rebuilding her life. The Padma Shri conferred upon Mangala Kapoor honours not only her dedication to music but also her immense courage.
