Preparations to implement the UCC in Chhattisgarh gain momentum; government forms high-level committee to be headed by retired Justice Ranjana Desai.

Raipur: The Chhattisgarh government has taken steps towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. The state government has constituted a high-level committee to study the feasibility of implementing the UCC and to prepare a draft for it. This committee will examine all aspects related to the Uniform Civil Code in the state and submit its report and recommendations to the government. Retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai will chair this committee.

Experts from administrative, legal, and social sectors have been included in the committee to ensure a comprehensive study of all aspects of the UCC. Retired IAS officers Shatrughna Singh and M.K. Raut, senior advocate Mohan Pawar, and retired principal Jyoti Rani Singh have been appointed as members. The inclusion of experts in law, administration, and social affairs aims to facilitate a thorough assessment of the UCC’s impact.

Study of subjects like marriage, divorce, and inheritance
The committee constituted by the government will study various legal aspects associated with implementing the UCC in the state. Specific areas of focus include marriage, divorce, maintenance, inheritance, and adoption. The committee will examine the differences between the laws currently in force in the state and the provisions of the Uniform Civil Code. Additionally, it will analyze the potential social and administrative impacts of implementing the UCC. The committee has been tasked with preparing a balanced draft after consulting experts on all relevant matters.

Suggestions to be sought from the public and experts
To prepare the draft of the Uniform Civil Code, the committee will invite suggestions from the general public, social organizations, legal experts, and other stakeholders. The government’s objective is to prepare a report that takes into account the opinions and suggestions of all sections of society. After reviewing these suggestions, the committee will present its recommendations to the government. Furthermore, the systems related to the Uniform Civil Code implemented in other states will also be examined. Examination of UCC Models from Other States
The committee will study the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) frameworks in states where it has already been implemented or where the process has been initiated. This will assist in formulating an effective and practical model for Chhattisgarh. The committee will also assess the legislative and administrative changes required to implement the UCC and provide recommendations to the government for further action based on these findings.

Submission of Draft and Recommendations to the Government
The committee will prepare a draft of the Uniform Civil Code and submit it to the state government. Along with the draft, it will provide necessary legislative and administrative recommendations to enable the government to determine the next steps. The objective of the Uniform Civil Code is to establish uniformity in personal laws applicable to citizens across the country or state. It involves considering the creation of uniform rules for personal matters concerning different communities. Following the Chhattisgarh government’s decision to constitute the committee, all eyes are now on its functioning, the consultation process, and the eventual report. A final decision regarding the implementation of the UCC in the state will be taken based on the committee’s report. Currently, the committee has been tasked with studying the feasibility, legal status, and social impact of the Uniform Civil Code in the state and preparing a comprehensive draft.
