Don’t ignore pain in the soles of your feet while walking! Find out what conditions it could signal and learn some simple remedies.

Often, sharp pain in the sole of the foot arises while walking, moving about, or simply upon standing up. The pain occurring at the ends of the bones can be excruciating and may interfere with your daily activities. Pain in the sole of the foot is frequently referred to as metatarsalgia. Today, we are discussing some of the causes behind this sharp pain in the soles.

Why does pain occur in the sole?

Ill-fitting footwear: Wearing poorly fitted shoes or sandals can lead to pain in the soles. People who wear high heels, shoes that are very narrow at the front, or shoes with stiff soles are more prone to foot and sole pain.

High activity levels: Engaging in high-intensity physical activities—such as running, sports, or dancing—can cause pain in the soles.

Foot structure: Some people have a unique foot structure; for instance, some have flat feet while others have high arches. Such individuals may experience pain in their feet and soles.

Toe structure: If your toes have an unusual shape—such as being excessively long—they may begin to curl or bend at the front of the shoe. Often, compression of the big toe places excessive pressure on the other toes and the foot itself.

Inflammatory arthritis: People suffering from arthritis often experience foot swelling. Conditions like gout and rheumatoid arthritis can trigger foot pain. Gout attacks occur suddenly, causing redness of the skin and intense pain. Rheumatoid arthritis often causes persistent stiffness and pain in the forefoot, particularly in the morning.

Obesity and rapid weight gain: Excess weight can lead to foot pain. Carrying extra weight places increased pressure on the feet when lifting or moving them. Sudden weight gain prevents the feet from recovering properly, leading to the onset of pain.

How can you relieve pain in the soles of your feet?

If you are experiencing severe pain in your feet or soles, give them a rest instead of engaging in physical activity. Opt for cycling or simply resting for 24–48 hours rather than running. Apply an ice pack to the ball of the foot for 10 minutes, repeating this process 2–3 times a day. When sitting on the sofa for extended periods, keep your feet elevated—raising them to a level closer to your heart. Avoid walking barefoot on tiled or concrete surfaces. Wear comfortable shoes and gently massage your feet with oil.
