Seema Kaliramna, a 27-year-old Indian female discus thrower, has successfully won a bronze medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with a personal best throw of 58.65 meters. Seema is a mother to a three-year-old child and is also pursuing a PhD in Physical Education. Having returned to competition at the National Games last year after giving birth, this marks her first medal at a major event since her comeback. With this medal, India’s total tally at the Commonwealth Games has reached 17, placing the country 10th on the medal table.
Seema’s 58.65-meter throw in the third attempt
Seema Kaliramna did not have an ideal start at the Commonwealth Games; her first throw hit the frame of the throwing circle. She bounced back with her second attempt, recording a throw of 57.32 meters and moving up to the third position. In her third and final attempt, she improved her performance with a throw of 58.65 meters, securing the bronze medal while maintaining her third-place standing. Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Samantha Hall won the gold medal with a throw of 61.66 meters, and Canada’s Julia Tunks claimed the silver with a throw of 60.67 meters.
Delighted to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games for the first time
Speaking to the news agency ANI after winning the bronze medal, Seema Kaliramna said, “I am very happy. This is my first Commonwealth Games, and I have won a bronze medal. I had to keep warming up repeatedly due to the cold weather here. I am currently pursuing a PhD at Chaudhary Bansi Lal University.” My guide, Dr. Suresh Kumar Malik, is very supportive, and everything is going well. It is worth noting that India has so far secured a total of eight medals—across both able-bodied and para-athlete categories—at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
