Many people observe the Sawan fast with great devotion, yet even a minor lapse in dietary habits during this time can take a toll on the body. People often assume that eating less is the right approach during a fast, but the reality is that the body still requires water, energy, and essential nutrients. Failing to meet these needs can lead to issues such as weakness, dizziness, headaches, fatigue, and restlessness. Fortunately, these problems can largely be avoided by keeping a few simple things in mind. Let us look at five common mistakes made during the fast.
Mistakes to avoid during the fast—
- Avoid deep-fried foods—
During the fast, many people snack throughout the day on items like sabudana vada, potato patties, fried tikki, chips, and other fried falahari (fast-friendly) foods. While these can be high in calories and fat, they often lack essential nutrients. Consuming them in excess can cause a feeling of heaviness and lethargy, and may even disrupt digestion. It is better to limit such foods and include items like seasonal fruits, yogurt, fox nuts (makhana), milk, amaranth (rajgira), and dry fruits in your diet. This ensures balanced nutrition and helps you feel lighter and more active throughout the day.
- Drinking insufficient water—
Many people drink less water than usual during the fast. This can lead to dehydration, causing dizziness, headaches, and fatigue. If your fast permits water intake, keep sipping small amounts throughout the day. Coconut water or lemon water can also be excellent options, provided they comply with the rules of your fast.
- Eating too much at once—
Consuming a large amount of food all at once after remaining hungry all day is not advisable. It can put a strain on the stomach and lead to issues like gas and bloating. It is better to eat small portions and chew your food thoroughly.
- Tea and Coffee –
Some people drink tea or coffee frequently to suppress hunger or feel refreshed. Excessive caffeine intake can lead to dehydration in some individuals. Consuming large amounts of tea or coffee on an empty stomach can also cause nervousness, acidity, or restlessness.
- Ignoring signs of weakness –
If you experience frequent dizziness, extreme weakness, sweating, or a feeling of faintness while fasting, do not dismiss it as normal. Individuals with conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, pregnancy, or other serious health issues should consult a doctor in such situations.
Note: Fasting is not just about abstaining from food; it is also about taking care of your body. Therefore, stay hydrated, consume a balanced diet suitable for fasting, and avoid staying on an empty stomach for prolonged periods. If you have a pre-existing medical condition or are on regular medication, it is advisable to consult a doctor before fasting.
