New Delhi: Rainfall activity has been ongoing across various states, including Delhi, for the past 24 hours. According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rain is expected to continue in several states over the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning for Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of the Northeast. Additionally, very heavy rainfall has been predicted for parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.
Rain Alert for Delhi and Several Other States Today
According to the weather office, moderate to heavy rain is likely today in Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, Mahe, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, and parts of Uttar Pradesh. The IMD has also forecast thunderstorm conditions for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands today. Similar weather conditions are expected in Andhra Pradesh, coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe, Lakshadweep, and North Interior Karnataka.
The Meteorological Department stated that heavy rainfall is likely in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Eastern Rajasthan, and Punjab between August 5 and 6. Heavy rain is expected in Chhattisgarh from August 5 to 10. Rainfall will continue in Bihar and Jharkhand until August 8. Isolated pockets of Odisha may also experience very heavy rainfall on August 5 and 6.
Red Alert for Heavy Rain in Kerala
A rainfall warning has been issued for eight districts in Kerala for the next 24 hours. According to the alert, the districts of Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod are under a ‘Red Alert,’ with the likelihood of receiving over 204 mm of rainfall in the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, an ‘Orange Alert’—indicating a warning for heavy rain—remains in effect for Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, and Alappuzha. Floods in Several States, Including Assam and Kerala
Continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days has created flood-like conditions in several states across the country, including Kerala, Odisha, Assam, and Gujarat. In Kerala, 25 people have lost their lives in incidents related to the torrential rains that began on August 1; four people are reported missing, and 10 others have been injured. Between August 1 and August 4, 52 houses were completely destroyed, while 565 homes suffered partial damage. Thousands of people have been forced to seek shelter in relief camps due to the heavy downpour. Rail operations have also been affected by the flooding.
Several areas in Odisha also remain in the grip of floods, with a fresh alert for heavy rain issued for today. Floodwaters have yet to recede from numerous villages in the Jajpur, Bhadrak, and Jagatsinghpur districts, forcing a large number of people to continue staying in relief camps. Meanwhile, several areas in Gujarat are also facing flood conditions.
