Path to direct entry into ICC tournaments closed! Major setback for the team ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The ODI World Cup is scheduled for next year. While there is still time, teams are already racing to secure direct qualification. Amidst this, the Irish team has suffered a major setback. The first match of the ODI series between Afghanistan and Ireland was washed out due to rain, effectively ending Ireland’s hopes for direct qualification. Although four more matches remain in the series, winning them will not yield any significant benefit for the team. Meanwhile, the dates for the qualifiers have been announced.

Ireland needed a clean sweep against Afghanistan in the five-match series

The five-match ODI series between Afghanistan and Ireland has commenced. However, the first match could not take place due to rain; the toss did not even happen. The cancellation of this match has closed the door on Ireland’s direct entry into the World Cup. To improve their ICC ranking and qualify directly, Ireland had only one option: to defeat Afghanistan 5-0 in the five-match series. They would then have needed the West Indies to lose their ODI series against India. Had this happened, Ireland’s ranking would have improved, allowing them to qualify directly.

Ireland must now play the World Cup qualifier round

With the first ODI washed out, the best Ireland can achieve is a 4-0 series victory. However, the team is not yet out of the race for the World Cup; they still have an alternative route. They must now compete in the World Cup qualifiers, featuring 10 teams from around the globe.

The format devised by the ICC this time

Qualifying for the World Cup via the qualifier tournament will not be an easy task. Among the 10 participating teams, the one topping the points table will advance directly to the World Cup. However, a ‘Super Series’ will be played among the teams finishing second, third, and fourth. The team that finishes at the top of this Super Series will qualify for the World Cup, while the other two will be eliminated. In other words, qualifying for the World Cup matches via this route will become an even more difficult task.

The Ireland team missed out in 2023 as well.

Prior to this, the Ireland team had failed to qualify for the 2023 World Cup too; at that time, the team was eliminated at the Super Six stage. Now, they have not secured direct entry into next year’s World Cup either. While the team has not been eliminated, they must now navigate a long and arduous qualification path.
