Russia-Ukraine War: Russia and Ukraine rained bombs on each other; heavy damage in Russian border areas; this many people died.

Russia-Ukraine War: Fierce fighting has erupted once again between Russia and Ukraine. Both nations bombarded each other throughout the night, resulting in numerous casualties and injuries on both sides. Russia is launching daily major attacks on Ukrainian cities, causing extensive damage. While Ukraine possesses the US-made Patriot air defense system, a severe shortage of interceptors is preventing it from effectively intercepting Russian missiles. However, Ukraine has also inflicted damage on Russia in retaliatory strikes. Ukraine launched drone attacks on Russian border regions, killing five people and injuring two dozen others—including a four-year-old boy—in Belgorod. Meanwhile, a Russian missile strike on a high-rise apartment block in Kharkiv, Ukraine, killed two people and injured 13. Additionally, eight people were injured in attacks involving dozens of missiles and drones at the Ukrainian Black Sea port of Odesa.

Shortage of Patriot Systems in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been attempting for months to secure Patriot systems from the US and other nations, emphasizing their critical importance for civilian safety. However, the US is currently grappling with tensions involving Iran, leading to a shortage of Patriot systems. Zelenskyy is seeking permission to manufacture Patriot systems within Ukraine or is looking to obtain approval from Elon Musk to use the Starlink satellite communication system to guide strikes against Russian targets—specifically, to take out Russian missile launchers.

Deepening Fuel Crisis in Russia

Ukraine is using long-range drones to strike Russian energy infrastructure, the country’s largest online retailer (Wildberries), and other targets within Russia. These attacks have triggered a fuel crisis in the country. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed on Sunday that overnight strikes targeted a drone warehouse in the Kharkiv region, as well as a Ukrainian military fuel depot and a supply storage facility at the port of Odesa. Russia also claimed to have shot down 153 Ukrainian drones during the night.

Heavy Damage in Russia’s Belgorod Region

Officials in Russia’s Belgorod region reported that Ukrainian drone attacks damaged 29 apartment blocks and five private homes, as well as an administrative building and unspecified “commercial premises.” Mayor Andrey Kravchenko stated on Sunday that debris from a Ukrainian drone also fell on two companies and a private home in the Russian city of Novorossiysk. Officials said the falling debris injured one person, damaged two private homes, and blew out the windows of an apartment block.
