These weekend habits could increase the risk of cancer! Don’t compromise your health in the name of relaxation; doctors issue a warning.

People celebrate enthusiastically during weddings, parties, and weekends, spending time with friends and family; however, in the name of enjoyment, they often consume alcohol, cigarettes, and gutkha (chewing tobacco). In metropolitan cities, people turn to alcohol to cope with stress and loneliness. While this may feel good temporarily, diseases gradually begin to develop in the body. Initially, people remain unaware of this danger as ailments silently take root. Doctors state that tobacco consumption is a leading cause of oral cancer. Smokeless tobacco products—such as gutkha, khaini, zarda, and paan with tobacco—can damage the inner lining of the mouth and the gums. Similarly, smoke from cigarettes and bidis increases the risk of oral, head, and neck cancers.

Dangerous Weekend Habits

Many people consume these substances thinking that since they do not use them daily, the risk is minimal. However, tobacco consumption in any form cannot be considered safe for health—especially when occasional use gradually turns into frequent consumption.

The Dangerous Combination of Alcohol and Tobacco

Consuming alcohol and tobacco together is a cause for concern. Alcohol can affect the lining of the mouth and increase exposure to the carcinogenic chemicals found in tobacco. Consequently, using both together significantly raises the risk of oral and throat cancers. Among young people, “social smoking” or the occasional use of tobacco with friends is often not taken seriously. Yet, this is precisely how many habits begin—with the common refrain, “I don’t do it every day.”

Do Not Ignore These Body Signals

If oral cancer is detected early, treatment outcomes can be very positive. Therefore, certain symptoms should not be ignored. If you notice symptoms such as a mouth sore that does not heal within two weeks, white or red patches in the mouth, difficulty opening the mouth or chewing, persistent burning or pain while eating, a lump or thickening in the tongue or any part of the mouth, difficulty swallowing, a painless lump in the neck, or a prolonged change in your voice, consult a head and neck or oral cancer specialist instead of attempting self-treatment.

The Role of Family is Crucial

A tobacco habit should not be dismissed merely as a personal choice. If a family member begins consuming gutkha or cigarettes at every party, wedding, or meal, they need a conversation rather than shaming. Often, individuals do not realize when a social habit has transformed into a regular addiction. Family support can play a vital role in helping them break free from this habit.

Celebrate While Prioritizing Health

There are other ways to enjoy the weekend. Engage in workouts, cycling, swimming, or any activity you enjoy. This boosts the production of “happy hormones” in the brain and offers numerous physical benefits. Spend time with your family, enjoy sweets during festivals, dance, and take photos; this will enhance both your celebrations and your memories.
