Padma Shri Devaki Amma: At an age when the world speaks of retirement, Kerala’s Devaki Amma was sowing hope in the soil. She was over 90 years old and physically frail, yet her resolve was as strong as that of any empowered farmer. A Padma Shri awardee, Devaki Amma was not merely a farmer but a living embodiment of organic farming. Her life demonstrates that revolutions sometimes begin quietly in the fields. Her story is not just about accolades; it is a testament to the belief that tradition and progress can go hand in hand.
Who was Devaki Amma?
Devaki Amma hailed from the Alappuzha district of Kerala. Although she lacked formal education, her understanding of agriculture surpassed what could be found in books. She dedicated the greater part of her life to preserving indigenous seeds, promoting organic farming, and fostering self-reliance among farmers.
Farming as a Life Mission
Devaki Amma believed that “humans survive only if the soil survives.” She never resorted to chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Her farming practices relied entirely on:
Indigenous seeds
Cow-dung manure
Natural pest control
Traditional agricultural knowledge
The vegetables, paddy, and grains grown on her farm were renowned for their superior taste and nutritional value.
Active in the Fields Even at 90
This is what made Devaki Amma truly special. Even when her body was failing her, she continued to teach farming techniques to others and distribute seeds. She inspired women to become self-reliant, believing that farming was not merely a job, but a form of service.
Honoured with the Padma Shri
The Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri in 2020. This award recognized her contributions to:
Organic farming
Indigenous seed conservation
Inspiring rural women
Preserving traditional agricultural knowledge
Devaki Amma proved that true contribution is not defined by age or academic degrees.
