Asian Games 2026: Indian Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Suchika Tariyal has made history with a stellar performance at the 2026 Asian Games. The 36-year-old secured a spot in the semi-finals by defeating the 2025 IMMAF World Champion, Altanchimeg Baglama, 2-0 in the quarter-final bout of the women’s traditional 60kg category.
With this victory, Suchika Tariyal has guaranteed India’s first-ever Mixed Martial Arts medal at the Asian Games. Reaching the semi-finals ensures she will win at least a bronze medal.
MMA Debut in 2017, Followed by a 7-Year Break
Suchika Tariyal began her MMA career with a victory in 2017. She subsequently stepped away from the sport for nearly seven years, though she continued to compete regularly in Judo and Jiu-Jitsu during that period.
In November 2024, she signed a multi-fight contract with the BRAVE Combat Federation for the women’s strawweight division. She then made her professional MMA comeback and secured a win at BRAVE CF 92, held in Bahrain in December 2024.
According to Suchika, Judo provided her with a strong foundation for MMA. Thanks to Judo, she was already proficient in ground fighting and grappling; upon transitioning to MMA, she primarily had to work on her standing game and striking skills.
The Journey from Judo to MMA
Suchika represented India in Judo at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. She later represented the country in Kurash at the 2023 Asian Games. In 2024, she also became a Jiu-Jitsu World Champion.
However, her sporting path kept shifting amidst constant changes in sports administration. Suchika faced a new challenge after the Jiu-Jitsu team for the Asian Games was dropped and its structure overhauled in January 2026. Consequently, she decided to participate in the MMA trials.
Honoured by the President and Prime Minister
Suchika Tariyal has represented India in four World Championships and over 30 international events. Beyond her sporting performance, she has been honoured for her influence on the youth and her contributions to women’s empowerment.
She has also appeared on popular TV and digital shows such as MTV Roadies and Prime Video’s ‘India’s Ultimate Warrior’.
Asian Games Preparation in Mumbai
To prepare for the challenge of competing in the Asian Games, Suchika underwent rigorous training with Coach Nikhil Kundar at the One Punch Academy in Andheri, Mumbai. Now, following her quarter-final victory, she has her sights set on the semi-final bout.
At the age of 36, Suchika Tariyal’s journey marks a significant milestone in Indian combat sports. By securing India’s first-ever MMA medal at the Asian Games 2026, she has added a new chapter to the country’s sporting history.
