The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean has issued an alert regarding retinoblastoma, a type of eye cancer that affects children.
What is Retinoblastoma?
Retinoblastoma is a rare form of cancer that develops in the retina at the back of the eye. This disease primarily affects young children, with most cases diagnosed in those under the age of three. Early detection and treatment significantly improve the chances of recovery; therefore, recognizing early symptoms is crucial.
A White Glow in the Pupil Can Be the First Sign
A key early sign of retinoblastoma is the appearance of an unusual white glow in the pupil. Normally, a red glow appears in the eyes when exposed to a camera flash or bright light. However, if a white glow—rather than a red one—repeatedly appears in one or both of a child’s eyes, it should not be dismissed as normal.
In such cases, it is essential to have the child’s eyes examined promptly, as timely screening can lead to early diagnosis.
Squinting or Misalignment of the Eye Can Also Be a Sign
Frequent turning or misalignment (squinting) of the eye is another potential sign of retinoblastoma. If a child repeatedly turns one eye inward or outward while looking straight ahead, it should not simply be dismissed as a minor issue or a “lazy eye.” In some instances, eye misalignment can indicate a serious underlying condition. What causes retinoblastoma?
Retinoblastoma can develop in one or both eyes. A mutation in the RB1 gene plays a crucial role in its development. In some children, it may occur due to genetic factors, while in many cases, the gene mutation develops spontaneously.
What should parents do?
If you notice a white glow, unusual marks, persistent squinting, or any other changes in the child’s eyes, consult an ophthalmologist or pediatrician immediately rather than waiting. Early examination and timely treatment can play a vital role in mitigating the impact of the serious condition.
