Massive fire breaks out on oil tanker following Ukrainian drone attack; sky over Black Sea turns black with smoke.

A massive fire broke out on an oil tanker near Russia’s southern coast on Tuesday. Preliminary reports indicate that the tanker, which was sailing in the Black Sea, was attacked by a Ukrainian naval drone, sparking the blaze. The fire sent up a thick plume of black smoke visible in the sky near the resort city of Sochi.

According to Russia’s Ministry of Transport, the Liberia-flagged oil tanker was struck while in the Black Sea. Crude oil leaking from the tanker could be seen burning on the sea’s surface. The fire was so intense that firefighters struggled significantly to bring it under control. However, all 23 crew members on board were safely rescued; reports suggest that all the crew members are Indian nationals.

Thick Plume of Smoke Over Sochi

Videos and photos emerging from Sochi revealed a harrowing scene along the coast. Fierce flames were seen rising from the tanker, and a thick cloud of black smoke spread across the sky. Following the incident, local authorities took precautionary measures, temporarily restricting public access to beaches and certain coastal areas.

Beaches Closed; Residents Advised to Stay Indoors

Dmitry Plishkin, head of the Sirius Federal Territory, confirmed the fire on the tanker. He stated that some beaches in Sirius have been temporarily closed to ensure public safety. Officials are continuously monitoring air and water quality.

Local authorities are assessing the situation in coordination with Russia’s Hydrometeorological Service. As a precaution, residents have been advised to stay indoors and keep their windows closed. Escalating Tensions in the Black Sea

This incident comes amidst a rise in attacks targeting energy facilities and commercial vessels in the Black Sea region during the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. In recent days, Russia has targeted grain-carrying ships linked to Ukraine near the Romanian coast. Meanwhile, Ukraine has been continuously attacking Russian oil and energy infrastructure.

Ukraine maintains that its strikes are in retaliation for the relentless attacks Russia has been launching against Ukrainian cities and strategic targets.

Intensifying Attacks in the Russia-Ukraine War

Russia has also stepped up attacks on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. These include daytime drone strikes and attacks on key bridges, disrupting daily life in the capital.

Previous Ukrainian attacks on oil facilities in southern Russia have led to incidents such as oil spills and the closure of beaches, raising environmental concerns. A recent fire on an oil tanker in the Black Sea has further heightened security and environmental anxieties in the region.
