Mid-air scare! Lightning strikes IndiGo flight at 17,000 feet; 150 passengers on board.

An IndiGo flight traveling from Patna to Lucknow narrowly escaped a major accident after being struck by lightning at an altitude of approximately 17,000 feet amidst adverse weather conditions. The lightning strike damaged the aircraft’s nose section, known as the radome. However, the pilot demonstrated presence of mind and composure, successfully landing the aircraft safely. All passengers and crew members on board are safe.

Following the incident, the aircraft has been immediately grounded, and a technical inspection has been initiated.

Aircraft Struck by Lightning During Flight

According to reports, IndiGo flight 6E625 (updated to 6E925) took off from Patna Airport around 3:10 PM. The aircraft was scheduled to arrive in Lucknow around 4:20 PM. During the flight, weather conditions deteriorated suddenly. While flying at an altitude of approximately 17,000 feet, the aircraft was struck by lightning.

The lightning strike, occurring amidst adverse weather and hailstorm conditions, damaged the radome located at the nose of the aircraft.

Pilot Executes Safe Landing

Despite the damage, the pilot maintained control of the situation and, following necessary protocols, safely landed the aircraft at Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport.

The aircraft landed at Lucknow Airport around 4:05 PM, ahead of schedule. Passengers breathed a sigh of relief following the safe landing.

Aircraft Grounded for Inspection

The aircraft was immediately withdrawn from service after landing. A team of engineers is now conducting a detailed technical inspection. Permission for the aircraft to fly again will be granted only after the necessary inspections and repairs are completed.

Relevant authorities have also been informed about the incident.

Ahmedabad-Bound Flight Also Affected

This same aircraft was scheduled to operate the flight from Lucknow to Ahmedabad (Flight 6E6968). However, it was held back at Lucknow Airport due to the technical inspection.

Subsequently, an alternative aircraft was arranged for the affected passengers. All passengers departed for Ahmedabad on the replacement aircraft at approximately 6:22 PM.

DGCA Initiates Investigation

Following the incident, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation into the matter. The probe will review the damage sustained by the aircraft and the prevailing adverse weather conditions. The aircraft will be returned to service only after the technical inspection and necessary repairs are completed.
