Alzheimer’s is not just a disease of old age! Symptoms can appear 5–10 years in advance; ignoring them could prove costly.

New Delhi: Alzheimer’s is generally considered a disease associated with aging, but new research has revealed important information regarding its early signs. According to the study, Alzheimer’s occurring before the age of 65 can, in many cases, differ from the form that develops later in life. In younger patients, the symptoms and associated health issues may also manifest differently.

The study further indicates that certain health-related changes can appear in the body years before an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Recognizing these signs is crucial, as it allows for timely consultation with a doctor.

These issues may appear 5 years before a diagnosis

According to the research, individuals who develop Alzheimer’s at a younger age may experience certain health issues as early as five years before the actual diagnosis. These include conditions such as depression, persistent headaches, dizziness, and epilepsy.

Additionally, issues such as brain injuries, cerebrovascular diseases (conditions affecting blood vessels in the brain), thyroid-related problems, and complications linked to excessive alcohol consumption have also been observed in patients within this age group.

However, the presence of these symptoms does not necessarily mean that an individual has Alzheimer’s; such issues can arise from various other causes. Therefore, seeking professional medical advice is essential for obtaining an accurate diagnosis and proper information.

Signs may appear 6 to 10 years in advance

A study published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association notes that in some individuals who develop Alzheimer’s at a younger age, certain changes may become apparent six to ten years before the disease is formally diagnosed.

These signs include a persistent ringing sensation in the ears (tinnitus) and a decline in hearing ability. It should be noted, however, that these issues alone do not confirm the presence of Alzheimer’s. There can be various other reasons behind hearing difficulties or persistent sounds in the ears.

Are heart-related conditions the primary cause of early-onset Alzheimer’s?

To understand the risk of Alzheimer’s in older age, factors such as high blood pressure and high levels of blood lipids (fats) are typically considered. However, studies on early-onset Alzheimer’s present a different picture.

According to researchers, risk factors like high blood pressure and elevated blood lipid levels are not more prevalent in individuals with early-onset Alzheimer’s compared to the general population. This suggests that the pattern of risk factors for early-onset Alzheimer’s may differ from that of the form of the disease that develops later in life.

What should not be ignored?

Medical advice should be sought if one experiences symptoms such as a persistent decline in memory, difficulty performing daily tasks, getting lost in familiar places, trouble recalling the right words during conversation, or changes in cognitive (thinking and reasoning) abilities.

It is important to understand that issues like headaches, dizziness, depression, hearing loss, or ringing in the ears are not, on their own, definitive evidence of Alzheimer’s. However, if there are persistent changes in memory and cognitive function, it is not advisable to dismiss them as merely a normal part of aging.

Note: Early signs of Alzheimer’s can vary from person to person. A timely medical evaluation can help identify the potential causes of these symptoms and assist in planning appropriate care.
