Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, the younger brother of the late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, is once again in the headlines. A matter has emerged involving the toddler—who is barely two-and-a-half years old—concerning gestures he allegedly made, mimicking the firing of a gun, during a public event in Toronto, Canada. A human rights organization based in Chandigarh has urged the Punjab administration to intervene. The organization has requested that the child’s parents receive counseling and that appropriate measures be taken in the child’s best interest. However, the allegations made in the complaint have not been independently verified, and the administration has yet to reach any final conclusion.
The matter relates to an event held in Toronto.
According to a report by the news agency ANI, an organization called ‘Lawyers for Human Rights International’ filed a complaint on October 17 with the Deputy Commissioner of Mansa and the District Child Protection Unit. The complaint, submitted by the organization’s General Secretary, advocate Navkiran Singh, mentions the child’s parents, Balkaur Singh and Charan Kaur.
The complaint cites provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. According to the organization, the young Sidhu was brought onto the stage during the opening event of the ‘Singed to God World Tour’ in Toronto, Canada, on October 9. It is alleged that during this time, the child made gestures mimicking the firing of a gun and even imitated the sound of a gunshot.
Citing videos circulating on social media, the organization claims that some individuals present at the event appear to have encouraged the child to repeat these gestures. The complaint expresses concern that promoting such behavior at such a tender age could negatively impact the child’s mental and social development. It should be noted, however, that these allegations are currently based solely on the claims of the complainant organization. Appeal for Counseling of Parents
A human rights organization has requested the administration to arrange for the counseling of the child’s parents, either through the District Child Protection Unit or a qualified child counselor. The organization emphasizes the need to sensitize parents regarding the appropriate behavior to model in front of children, as well as the precautions to be taken when children participate in public events.
The complaint further requests that appropriate measures be taken to prevent the child from being encouraged—in future public appearances—to mimic gestures such as handling or firing a gun. Additionally, it has been requested that the matter be monitored and compliance with necessary guidelines be reviewed.
The organization has urged the District Magistrate to address the complaint promptly, through the Child Welfare Committee. It asserts that any action taken must prioritize the child’s safety, well-being, and best interests.
Reference to the Murder of Sidhu Moosewala
The complaint also mentions the murder of Sidhu Moosewala. The popular Punjabi singer was shot dead on May 29, 2022, near Jawaharke village in the Mansa district of Punjab. His death left the music industry and his fans in a state of deep shock.
Citing this context, the organization has expressed concerns regarding the child’s safety and development. However, it has clarified that it has no objection to the child’s participation in events held in memory of the late singer; its primary concern lies in the child being encouraged to mimic gestures associated with violence.
No Demand for Strict Action Against Parents
The human rights organization has clarified that it is not seeking punitive action against the child’s parents, nor is it requesting a change in the child’s custody. The organization’s objective is for the relevant authorities to investigate the complaint and take necessary steps, with the child’s best interests as the primary consideration. As of now, no final decision from the administration regarding this matter has been announced. Consequently, the next steps and the stance of the authorities concerning the complaint are currently awaited.
