Varun Gandhi and Aparna Yadav at Political Crossroads—Is Their Dignity the Final Battle in BJP’s Power Play?

BJP Power Play: Aparna Yadav’s recent appointment as Vice President of the Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission has sparked discontent, with reports suggesting she feels the role is beneath her. This dissatisfaction, coupled with her rumored contact with Shivpal Yadav, mirrors Varun Gandhi’s past struggles in balancing family loyalties with party politics. While opinions diverge, both cases highlight internal conflicts within their respective parties.

A Shift in Political Focus

As history cycles through its phases, we now see a shift from the Gandhi family to the Yadav family in Indian politics. A decade after significant political events centered on the Gandhis, the focus has now turned to the Yadavs, particularly with recent developments involving Aparna Yadav in Uttar Pradesh.

BJP’s Post-Election Turmoil

The BJP’s internal turbulence following the 2024 Lok Sabha election results has settled, but the repercussions are still evident. With the party’s seat count dropping to just 33, there is visible unrest. Aparna Yadav, recently appointed as Vice President of the State Women’s Commission, is reportedly unhappy with this role, feeling it does not reflect her stature. Her frustration is compounded by reports of her ongoing communication with her uncle-father-in-law, Shivpal Yadav.

BJP Power Play

Aparna’s Political Transition

Aparna Yadav’s journey has been marked by her departure from the Samajwadi Party to join the BJP in 2022. Her decision to switch parties was seen as a rebellion against her own family, the Yadavs. Despite campaigning for the BJP in the 2024 elections and publicly supporting the party, she has faced challenges in securing a prominent role, leading to her discontent with her current position.

Parallels with Varun Gandhi

Aparna Yadav’s situation draws comparisons with Varun Gandhi, another leader caught between familial ties and party politics. In 2014, Varun Gandhi faced a dilemma when the BJP gave him a ticket for Sultanpur but expected him to campaign against Rahul Gandhi in Amethi. Varun’s refusal to attack Rahul Gandhi and his insistence on maintaining decorum reflected his struggle with balancing family loyalty and party expectations.

Varun Gandhi’s Isolation

Despite his potential, Varun Gandhi’s political career became increasingly isolated. Once a prominent figure and a contender for Chief Minister in Uttar Pradesh, Varun’s alignment with family values and reluctance to openly criticize the Gandhi family led to his marginalization within the BJP. His reluctance to campaign against Rahul Gandhi and his subsequent disappearance from the political limelight highlight the personal and political challenges he faced.

Diverging Views on Aparna’s Discontent

Opinions on Aparna Yadav’s frustration vary. Senior journalist Siddharth Kalhans points out that Varun Gandhi’s political stature within the BJP is significantly higher than Aparna’s, noting his long-standing political legacy. He suggests that Aparna’s discontent is partly due to her incomplete integration into the BJP and her ongoing connections with the Yadav family. However, Akhilesh Bajpai argues that Aparna’s dissatisfaction is mainly about her role, not a broader political issue, and that her interactions with Shivpal Yadav should not be overemphasized.
