British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called for calm and constructive discussions on Greenland following former US President Donald Trump’s threat of imposing tariffs linked to the strategically important Arctic territory.
Speaking to reporters, Starmer emphasised the need for diplomacy and international cooperation, saying that sensitive geopolitical matters such as Greenland’s future should be handled through dialogue rather than economic pressure.
The remarks come after Trump warned of potential trade tariffs if Denmark and its allies continue to resist US strategic interests in Greenland. The comments have reignited global debate over the island’s geopolitical importance due to its vast mineral resources and key location in the Arctic.
Starmer said the United Kingdom supports peaceful negotiations and respects Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland, urging all parties to avoid escalation.
“Global stability depends on cooperation, not confrontation,” Starmer said, adding that responsible leadership is essential in addressing international disputes.
Greenland has increasingly become a focal point of global interest as melting Arctic ice opens new shipping routes and access to rare earth minerals.
Political analysts say the situation highlights growing competition among major powers for influence in the Arctic region.
