Where Did ₹7,400 Crore Go? Months Pass, ₹2000 Notes Still Unreturned

RBI on ₹2000 Notes: According to the information given by RBI, people still have 2000 rupee notes worth Rs 7400 crore. Whereas it was announced to be taken out of circulation in May last year. This year, the number of notes returned has remained below 98 percent for many

RBI on ₹2000 Notes: RBI has said on Thursday that 97.92 percent of 2000 rupee notes have returned to the banking system. At the same time, notes worth Rs 7,409 crore are still with the public. It is worth noting that the situation of 2000 rupee notes has been more or less the same for the last several months. In the figures released by RBI in March this year, 97.62 percent 2000 rupee notes had returned to the banks. After this, on 1st July last month, the number of 2000 rupee notes returned to the banking system had increased to 97.87 percent.

That is, only 0.05 percent of the notes have been returned in 1 month. In such a situation, the question arises that where have the 2000 rupee notes of the value of 7,409 disappeared. Why are these notes not coming back to the banks. No response has been given by the government or RBI on this yet. On May 19, 2023, when the 2000 notes were taken out of circulation, the total value of the notes of this denomination in the market was Rs 3.56 lakh crore.

85 percent notes were deposited in the first month

In May 2023, 2000 notes were taken out of circulation and in June 2023, 85 percent of the 2000 notes in circulation were back in the banking system. People were given the last chance to deposit or exchange these notes in their nearest banks till October 7. But even by the beginning of October, only 87 percent of 2000 notes had reached back to the banks. After this, at a snail’s pace, the number of total notes returned to the banking system has now reached close to 98 percent.

Where will the notes be deposited now?

If you still have 2000 rupee notes, you can deposit them in any of the 19 issue offices of RBI. Apart from this, you can also send these notes directly to RBI through post. However, now these notes will not be exchanged and you will get the same value in your bank account. These offices are in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.
