Amanatullah Khan Arrested:  Aam Aadmi Party MLA Amanatullah Khan has been arrested by the ED. He was arrested under PMLA in the Waqf Board appointment scam. The ED arrested him after questioning him for about 9 hours. Following the Supreme Court’s order, MLA Amanatullah Khan appeared before the ED for questioning on Thursday (April 18).

Arrests made in Wakf Board appointment scam

Aam Aadmi Party leader and Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan is accused of illegally recruiting 32 people as the chairman of the Delhi Waqf Board. Along with this, he has illegally rented out many properties of the Delhi Waqf Board. It has also been alleged that he has misused the funds of the Delhi Waqf Board. The then CEO of the Delhi Waqf Board had issued a statement against such illegal recruitment.

In this case, the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) had questioned Amanatullah Khan in September 2022. On this basis, the ACB raided four places, from where about Rs 24 lakh in cash was recovered. Apart from this, two illegal and unlicensed pistols, cartridges and ammunition were also recovered.

After this, Amanatullah was arrested on the basis of evidence and objectionable material found against him. He was later released on bail on 28 December 2022.

What did the court say in the last hearing?

Earlier on Monday (April 15), the Supreme Court refused to grant anticipatory bail to Aam Aadmi Party leader Amanatullah Khan in the money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in the Waqf Board. A bench of Justices Sanjeev Khanna and Dipankar Dutta had said that Amanatullah Khan should not be arrested unless there is sufficient evidence against him.

The bench had told the ED counsel, “If there is any evidence then only you should arrest him (Amanatullah Khan). You have to follow section 19 of PMLA. The power to arrest should not be taken lightly.”
