Arvind Kejriwal Arrested: Priyanka Gandhi targets the government
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi said, “It is absolutely wrong and unconstitutional to target Delhi Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal in this manner due to elections. Lowering the level of politics in this manner suits neither the Prime Minister nor his government. Fight your critics in the electoral battlefield, compete with them strongly, attack their policies and working style of course – this is democracy. But using the power of all the institutions of the country in this way to fulfill your political purpose, weakening them by putting pressure is against every principle of democracy. The bank accounts of the country’s largest opposition party Congress have been frozen, all political parties and their leaders are under pressure day and night by ED, CBI, IT, one Chief Minister has been put in jail, now preparations are being made to take the other Chief Minister to jail as well. Such a shameful scene is being seen for the first time in the independent history of India.”
Background
ED team has reached Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s house. About half a dozen people from the ED team have reached the CM’s residence. On Thursday, the Delhi High Court refused to grant relief to CM Arvind Kejriwal. A bench of Justice Suresh Kumar Kait and Justice Manoj Jain has listed the application requesting protection for further consideration on April 22. His main petition challenging the summons will also be heard on the same day (April 22).
The bench said, “We have heard both the sides and we are not inclined (to grant protection) at this stage. The respondent is free to file a reply.” The application for interim relief is part of Kejriwal’s petition challenging the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summons issued to him for questioning. Kejriwal has approached the court in view of the ninth summons issued by the ED. In the ninth summons, Kejriwal has been asked to appear on Thursday.
During the hearing, Kejriwal’s senior counsel requested to postpone the summons issued for today. Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, appearing for the ED, said, “The time to appear is over. He is not appearing.” Kejriwal has repeatedly refused to appear before the federal anti-money laundering agency, calling the summons illegal.
The case is related to the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22. This policy was later repealed. AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh are in judicial custody in the case. Kejriwal’s name has been mentioned several times in the charge sheet filed by the ED.
