Delhi plans elevated road along Yamuna

To improve road and metro connectivity in the national capital, the Delhi Government has prepared a proposal to construct a 19.2-km elevated road along the Yamuna from Wazirabad to DND. In this regard, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday carried out a detailed review of Delhi Metro and associated road and flyover projects, reiterating that building a modern and efficient public transport system remains a top priority for the government.

When the project is completed, travelling through the heavily congested areas of Majnu Ka Tila, Metcalfe House and Sarai Kale Khan in North-Central Delhi will become signal-free. Additionally, a proposal for a 2.62-km flyover from Tripolia Gate to Barfkhana has also been readied.

The PWD’s initial plan to connect Wazirabad to DND was proposed in two parts. In the first part was the elevated road between Signature Bridge and Salimgarh Fort-Ring Road bypass. In the next, this road would have been extended to the DND Flyway. Now the project is planned in three phases — Surghat to ISBT, ISBT to Sarai Kale Khan and Sarai Kale Khan to DND.

The Chief Minister said expanding a modern public transport system remains a top priority to reduce congestion and curb pollution in the capital. She directed officials to ensure timely completion of all projects and resolve bottlenecks without delay. Senior officials, including the Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, attended the meeting. The Chief Minister noted that while most projects are progressing steadily, issues in some stretches are being identified and addressed.

The Chief Minister said several major corridors are targeted for completion by December 2026. These include Krishna Park Extension to Deepali Chowk, Majlis Park to Derawal Nagar, Derawal Nagar to R K Ashram, Tughlakabad to Sangam Vihar, Sangam Vihar to Saket G Block and Saket G Block to Aerocity. These stretches are expected to improve connectivity across key parts of the city.

The Chief Minister said the expansion of metro lines and integrated road networks will strengthen the city’s transport backbone. She added that these projects will make commuting faster and more efficient while reducing traffic congestion and pollution levels. Officials have been directed to maintain close coordination and ensure regular monitoring of all works to meet deadlines.
