Is China Using AI to Influence India’s General Elections? Microsoft Makes Big Claim

Microsoft claim on AI: General elections in India are scheduled to begin on April 19, the results of which will be declared on June 4. The electoral process will be held in seven phases. The first phase will begin on April 19.

Microsoft claim on AI: Microsoft has warned that China could influence upcoming elections in India, the United States and South Korea using Artificial Intelligence-generated content. This warning comes after China tested using AI to influence the results during Taiwan’s presidential election. National elections are going to be held in at least 64 countries around the world. These countries collectively account for about 49 percent of the global population.

Last month, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. During this, the two discussed women-led development, health and the use of AI.

According to Microsoft ‘s threat intelligence team , Chinese-backed cyber groups, with the help of North Korea, could target several elections scheduled for 2024. Microsoft said that China can influence public opinion in its own interest by using AI-generated content through social media to influence public opinion.

”With major elections taking place around the world this year, particularly in India, South Korea, and the United States, our assessment is that China, at a minimum, will create and expand AI-enabled content to benefit its interests,” Microsoft said in a statement.

AI threatens elections

Microsoft said a Beijing-backed group known as Storm 1376 or Spamouflage was particularly active during Taiwan’s election. The group disseminated content using AI, including fake audio support and memes, aimed at discrediting certain candidates and influencing voter perceptions.

False content can be created using AI technology, including “deepfakes” or fabricated events that never occurred.
