Four days after a young man died after falling into a pit dug by water authority in west Delhi’s Janakpuri, another incident involving unsafe civic infrastructure was reported from Rohini on Tuesday evening. A young man fell into an open drain, prompting an urgent rescue operation by police and emergency teams.
The incident occurred near the Mahashakti Kali Temple in Rohini Sector 32, an area that falls under the Begumpur police station. Police officials said a PCR call regarding the fall was received at around 7.45 pm, following which local police, rescue teams and other emergency responders were immediately dispatched to the spot. According to the police, search and rescue operations are currently underway to locate the victim. “Our teams reached the site soon after receiving the call. Rescue efforts are in progress,” a senior police officer said, adding that the operation is challenging due to the depth of the drain and limited visibility.
Police said the identity of the man who fell into the drain has not yet been confirmed. Rescue teams are using torches and specialised equipment to scan the drain and nearby stretches. The area has been cordoned off to prevent further mishaps.
Officials added that civic agencies would be asked to provide details about the maintenance of the drain and whether proper safety measures were in place. Any further legal action will depend on the findings of the inquiry.With two serious incidents reported within a span of days, questions are being raised about public safety and monitoring of infrastructure works in Delhi.
