Manipur Violence Sparks Crisis: NPP Withdraws Support from BJP, Demands AFSPA Removal—Kharge Slams Govt on Safety and Unity!

Manipur Violence, NPP Pulls Out Support: Violent protests are continuing in Manipur after the bodies of 3 women and 3 children were found. Meanwhile, the National People’s Party, which is part of the BJP government in the state, has announced withdrawal of support. The NPP has 7 members in the 60-member Manipur Assembly, who were supporting the BJP government. The BJP has 32 members, while the majority figure is 31. In such a situation, the government is not in danger at the moment.

Earlier, Home Minister Amit Shah has returned to Delhi after cancelling four rallies in Nagpur. He will hold a meeting regarding the security arrangements in the state. Meanwhile, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) chief Anish Dayal is being sent to take stock of the situation.

Meanwhile, the state government has asked the Centre to withdraw the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). Due to the violence, the Central Government had imposed AFSPA on November 14 in Sekmai, Lamsang, Lamlai, Jiribam, Limakhong and Moirang police station areas of Imphal West, Imphal East, Jiribam, Kangpokpi and Bishnupur districts.

On November 16, the bodies of two women and a child were found on the banks of the Barak River in Jiribam. It is suspected that they were kidnapped from Jiribam by Kuki militants on November 11. On November 11 itself, security forces killed 10 gun-wielding militants. Whereas the Kuki-Ji organization described these 10 people as village guards. On the night of November 15 also, the bodies of a woman and two children were found.

What did NPP say to withdraw its support?

The letter to Nadda said, “We strongly feel that the Manipur State Government led by Biren Singh has completely failed to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy. Keeping in mind the current situation, the National People’s Party has decided to withdraw its support to the Biren Singh-led Government in the State of Manipur with immediate effect.”

How many MLAs does NPP have?

The NPP has seven MLAs in Manipur. These MLAs include Sheikh Nurul Hassan (Kshetrigao AC), Khuraijam Loken Singh (Wangoi AC), Irengbam Nalini Devi (Oinam AC), Thongam Shanti Singh (Moirang AC), Mayanglambam Rameshwar Singh (Kakching AC), N. Kayisi (Tadubi AC) and Janghemlang Panmei (Tamenglong AC). 

What will be the impact on Manipur government?

In the 2022 Manipur Assembly elections, the BJP won 32 seats and the NPP won 7 seats, while other parties, including the Congress (5), won 21 seats. The party has seven MLAs in the 60-member assembly. The withdrawal of support will not affect the government as the BJP has a majority of its own.

Due to the protests, curfew imposed

Due to the protests, curfew has been imposed in five valley districts of Manipur, while internet has been banned in seven districts for two days from 5:15 pm on Saturday. These districts are Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi and Churachandpur.

Actually, on November 11, armed militants wearing uniforms attacked the Borobreka police station premises and the CRPF camp. 10 militants were killed in this. During this, 6 people were kidnapped from the relief camp located in the Borobreka police station premises of Jiribam district.

The BJP wants Manipur to burn. It is doing politics of hatred and division. 17 people have lost their lives in the state since November 7. Violence is erupting in many other districts.

You (PM Modi) failed in the case of Manipur. If you ever go to Manipur in the future, the people there will never forgive you. They will never forget that you left them on their own.

At the same time, Rahul posted on X late night on November 16 and said- The recent violent clashes in Manipur are disturbing. It has been more than a year. Every Indian wants the central and state governments to try to end the violence. I once again request PM Modi to come to Manipur and work towards peace and reform in the region.

Kharge said- Double engine government in Manipur

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said- You (BJP) have a double engine government in Manipur. Neither Manipur is united, nor is Manipur safe. Since May 2023, it has been going through unimaginable pain, division and increasing violence, which has destroyed the future of its people.

Mizoram government expressed grief over Manipur violence

The Mizoram government has appealed to the Central and Manipur governments to take immediate action to stop the violence and restore peace.

The Home Department of Mizoram expressed condolences to the families of those killed and the injured. The government has asked the people of Mizoram not to do anything that may increase tension here.

Due to the violence, around 7,800 people from Manipur have taken refuge in Mizoram. These people belong to the Kuki-Zo community, which has a deep cultural connection with the Mizo community of Mizoram.
