Shyam Benegal Passes Away: Father of art cinema Shyam Benegal has passed away at the age of 90. He was ill for a long time.

Shyam Benegal Passes Away: Famous film director, screenwriter and producer Shyam Benegal died in Mumbai on Monday. He breathed his last at the age of 90. Shyam Benegal’s films gave some of the greatest actors to Indian cinema, including Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Amrish Puri, Anant Nag, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil and cinematographer Govind Nihalani.

Apart from making documentaries on Jawaharlal Nehru and Satyajit Ray, he also directed serials ‘Yatra’, ‘Katha Sagar’ and ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’ for Doordarshan.

Was suffering from this disease

Pia Benegal said that her father was suffering from chronic kidney disease and had reached the last stage of the disease. Shyam Benegal was 90 years old. A decision will be taken later regarding the funeral.

Awarded with Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan

For his contribution to the film industry, he was awarded Padma Shri in 1976 and Padma Bhushan in 1991. Apart from this, he has 8 National Awards to his credit. He holds the record of winning the most National Awards. In 1991, the Government of India also awarded him Padma Bhushan. In 2005, Benegal was also given the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honour in Indian cinema.

Shyam Benegal has made dozens of excellent films like Zubeida, The Making of the Mahatma, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero, Mandi, Aarohan, Welcome to Sajjanpur. His films have won 8 National Awards. He has also received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

In 2010, the then President Pratibha Patil honoured Shyam Benegal with the Silver Kamala Award.

Shyam Benegal used to do Photography Earlier

Shyam Benegal used to do photography before entering films. Before entering films, Shyam Benegal did many jobs. He first studied economics. After that he started photography. He was very fond of photography. When he was 12 years old, he made his first film on camera for his father Shridhar B. Benegal.

Shyam Benegal is Guru Dutt’s cousin

Shyam Sunder Benegal was born on 14 December 1934 in a middle class family in Hyderabad. He is the cousin of famous actor and filmmaker Guru Dutt. Shyam’s father was fond of still photography. Shyam also used to take pictures of children often. After doing M.A. in Economics, he started photography. Before making his first film ‘Ankur’, he made many ad films for ad agencies. Before making films and ads, Shyam used to work as a copywriter.
