India has decided to call back its High Commissioner and other diplomats who are being targeted in Canada. Along with this, India has expelled 6 Canadian diplomats including Canada’s Acting High Commissioner Stewart Ross Wheeler and First Secretary Mary Catherine Jolie posted in New Delhi.

In fact, Justin Trudeau’s government has called Indian High Commissioner and diplomat Sanjay Kumar Verma a ‘person of interest’ i.e. a suspect in the case of the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Nijjar in Canada. India has given a strong response to this provocative act of Canada. The Ministry of External Affairs first expressed strong displeasure at summoning the Canadian Ambassador-in-Charge posted in India. After this, it announced the recall of these diplomats from Canada.
What did the Foreign Ministry say?
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement, “The Canadian Charge d’Affaires was summoned this evening. He was informed that the baseless targeting of the Indian High Commissioner, other diplomats and officials in Canada is completely unacceptable.” The ministry said, “It was emphasized that the actions of the Trudeau government in the atmosphere of extremism and violence have endangered their security. We have no confidence in the commitment of the current Canadian government to ensure their security.”
The Ministry of External Affairs said, “Therefore, the Government of India has decided to recall the High Commissioner and other diplomats and officials who are being targeted.” It said, “It has also been informed that India reserves the right to take further steps in response to the Trudeau government’s support to extremism, violence and separatism against India.”
Who is Sanjay Kumar Verma?
Born in Bihar, Sanjay Verma is a 1988 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer. He has had an illustrious diplomatic career spanning more than three decades. Born on 28 July 1965, Verma did his graduation from Patna University and then did post graduation in Physics from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi.
Mastery in Chinese language too
Sanjay Kumar Verma was selected for the Indian Foreign Service in the year 1988. Apart from Hindi, he has a good command over English and Chinese Mandarin language. After joining the diplomatic services, he got posted in the Indian High Commission in Hong Kong and China. Then he was also posted in the Indian Embassies in Vietnam and Turkey. After this, he served as the Consul General of India in Milan, Italy.
Sanjay Verma also served as the Indian Ambassador to the Republic of Sudan. After his tenure in Sudan, Sanjay Verma served as Joint Secretary and then Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. He later served as India’s Ambassador to Japan and the Republic of the Marshall Islands. From there, in September 2022, he was appointed as India’s High Commissioner to Canada.
