At the same time, the voting days in Jammu and Kashmir (Jammu Kashmir Assembly Election 2024) have not changed, but now the counting of votes will be done on October 8. In such a situation, the question arises whether this has happened for the first time?
When did the date change for the first time?
After independence, the dates were first changed during the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in 2012. The Election Commission has said that in the 2012 elections, the date of voting had to be changed due to Baravafat. After this, the Election Commission did not have to change the day for a long time. But in 2022, the Election Commission had to change the dates twice.
First during the Punjab Assembly elections and then during the Manipur Assembly elections. In Punjab, the Election Commission had to change the dates due to Guru Ravidas Jayanti. Actually, on the occasion of Guru Ravidas Jayanti, many people from Punjab go to Varanasi. Then the Punjab elections were postponed for a week.
Similarly, during the 2022 assembly elections in Manipur, the Election Commission changed the polling dates to respect the Sunday prayers of the Christian community.
What was the problem this time?
During the 2023 Rajasthan Assembly elections, the Election Commission had to change the date. The voting to be held on Devuthani Ekadashi was changed. Actually, mass marriages are organized in Rajasthan on Devuthani Ekadashi.
Now after this, the dates of assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir have been changed. Actually, this year Asoj Amavasya festival is on October 2. People of Bishnoi community go to Rajasthan to participate in it. Obviously, if the elections were held on October 1, they would have been deprived.
So the date of voting had to be changed in Haryana. At the same time, the date of counting of votes also had to be extended due to less time. For this reason, the date of counting of votes has also been extended in Jammu and Kashmir. Usually, counting of votes is done on the same day.
