Here we tell you what are the major reasons for the defeat of Congress and victory of BJP in Haryana Assembly elections.
The reason for Congress’ defeat is thatÂ
More dependence on Jat voters
The Congress relied heavily on Jat voters, who constitute around 27% of the state’s electorate. Of the Jat-dominated seats, the Congress was leading in Kaithal, Baroda, Julana, Uchana Kalan, Tohana, Dabwali, Ellenabad, Narnaund, Meham, Garhi Sampla-Kiloi and Badli at 2 pm, but several other seats like Panipat Rural, Sonipat, Gohana, Badhra, Jhajjar voted in favour of the BJP.
However, the Muslim vote bank stood firmly with the Congress. Congress candidate Mamman Khan from Ferozepur Jhirka won by a huge margin of 98,441 votes, while two other Muslim-dominated seats of Nuh and Punahana are also likely to go to the Congress’s account.
Internal conflict damages the party
During this entire election, the rift between Dalit leader and Sirsa MP Kumari Selja and former CM Bhupendra Singh Hooda was clearly visible within the Congress. This is also a big reason for the party’s defeat. Let us tell you that Selja, angry at giving preference to Hooda’s candidates, stayed away from the last phase of campaigning for a few days and she had to be persuaded to join the campaign again.
Apart from this, he repeatedly staked claim to the CM’s chair, which brought the party’s internal conflict to the fore. This gave the BJP an opportunity to claim that the Congress had no clarity about the CM face. At the same time, due to Saini being from the OBC community, the BJP got the non-Jat voters in its favour.
The issues of Agniveer, farmer and wrestler did not work
After the Congress’s improved performance in the recently held Lok Sabha elections, where it won 5 out of 10 seats in the state, its leaders became more aggressive. Relying heavily on farmers’ protest, wrestlers’ issue, Agneepath scheme and buoyed by a 15% increase in vote share in the Lok Sabha elections , the Congress campaign revolved only around these issues but failed to translate into votes for the party.
People did not trust the guarantee of Congress
Let us tell you that in the recent assembly elections of five states, there was a competition between the BJP’s Sankalp Patra and the Congress’ guarantee. In every election rally, PM Modi was presenting the BJP’s Sankalp Patra to the voters as ‘Modi’s guarantee’. In which the Congress’ guarantee worked in Telangana, Himachal, Karnataka, whereas in Haryana’s neighboring state Himachal, Congress could not fulfill its promise. Due to which the voters of Haryana did not trust the Congress’ guarantee.
The reason for BJP’s victory was thatÂ
BJP removed the anti-BJP wave by changing the CM
When the Haryana assembly elections were announced, all the analysts including political pundits had declared the departure of BJP from Haryana. Congress put the government on the back foot with an aggressive campaign on the issues of anti-incumbency, wrestler, farmer and jawan. On the other hand, BJP removed the 10-year anti-incumbency wave by changing the CM in 6 months. Even in the exit polls after the voting, BJP was given only 25-28 seats. Even after this, Nayab Singh Saini remained firm on his belief. BJP got absolute majority in the elections.Â
BJP worked on OBC, Dalit and non-Jats
Despite facing anti-incumbency wave, the BJP worked on OBC, Dalit and non-Jat vote banks to improve its vote share and seat share even after being in power twice and almost succeeded.
Rebels were not given attention
During this assembly election, BJP selected the candidates without any pressure. Due to this many leaders got angry and many leaders rebelled against the party and entered the fray. The biggest name among them was Naveen Jindal’s mother Savitri Jindal. She contested the election as an independent candidate from Hisar but the party fielded its own candidate against her.
Ram Rahim gets parole before Haryana elections
Before the Haryana elections, Ram Rahim was given parole. Congress had strongly opposed this, but once again getting 20 days parole under BJP rule sent a message to Ram Rahim’s followers that BJP takes great care of Ram Rahim Baba and obviously they benefitted from it.
