Pacer Jasprit Bumrah, one of India’s cricketing stars, added another feather to his cap by being named the Best International Cricketer of the Year (Men) for 2023-24 at the BCCI Awards. Bumrah had an exceptional year, claiming 15 wickets in the T20 World Cup, where his match-winning spells played a pivotal role in India clinching the title after 17 years. His stellar performance earned him the Player of the Tournament accolade.
In Test cricket, Bumrah was a dominant force, ending 2024 as the highest wicket-taker with 71 wickets in 13 matches—a feat only surpassed by Kapil Dev in a single calendar year for India. This recognition marks Bumrah’s third Polly Umrigar Award, having previously won it in 2018-19 and 2021-22. He now trails only Virat Kohli, who holds the record with five awards, while Sachin Tendulkar and Ravichandran Ashwin have each won it twice.
On the women’s front, Smriti Mandhana claimed her third Best International Cricketer of the Year (Women) award, adding to her wins in 2020-21 and 2021-22. Mandhana shone brightly in ODIs, scoring 747 runs at an impressive average of 57.46, including a record-setting four centuries in a single calendar year. Her efforts also earned her the ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year award.
Sarfaraz Khan and Asha Sobhana were recognized as the Best International Debutants (Men and Women, respectively), while cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was honored with the Col. CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award. The Master Blaster continues to hold the record for the most runs in both Test and ODI cricket.
The BCCI has finalized a list of 26 awards on Friday, and the official ceremony took place in Mumbai.
