Ticket glitch or fraud? Entry dispute puts IPL ticketing under scrutiny

A dispute over entry into an IPL match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium has exposed a deeper concern over ticketing integrity, with a Delhi and District Cricket Association director alleging fraud and security lapses, claims that the association has rejected as a technical glitch.

DDCA director Anand Verma has filed a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central District, alleging that valid ticket holders were denied entry into the stadium during the April 4 match between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians. He claimed that unauthorised persons had already used duplicate versions of the same tickets to gain access. “When the complainant and his guests arrived at the designated entry gate, they were illegally stopped and denied entry,” Verma stated in his complaint. He added that he was informed that the complimentary tickets issued to him had already been scanned and used by unknown individuals. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Delhi, Rohit Rajbir Singh said the matter is currently being examined. “The matter is under enquiry as of now,” he said.

According to Verma, the incident points to a serious breach of trust and possible manipulation within the ticketing system. He said the discovery raised concerns not just about financial irregularities but also about security arrangements at the stadium.

Verma said he immediately contacted DDCA Chief Financial Officer Manan Gupta after learning about the issue. However, he alleged that no immediate corrective action was taken. Instead, he was referred to another official responsible for ticketing, identified as Bhushan, but did not receive a satisfactory explanation regarding how the tickets had been used earlier.

Calling the incident a case of “misappropriation of complementary tickets,” Verma alleged that such lapses indicate a breakdown of internal controls. He further claimed that the role of security personnel at the entry gate needs scrutiny. “The collusion of security personnel in this fraudulent activity is a matter of grave concern,” he alleged, adding that allowing unauthorised entry compromises the safety of spectators and the overall security framework of the venue. The allegations come at a time when the stadium is scheduled to host five more matches in the ongoing IPL season, raising concerns over preparedness and crowd management.

Responding to the claims, DDCA secretary Ashok Sharma dismissed the allegations of ticket duplication and termed the issue a technical error. He said the problem occurred due to a failure of the scanning system to read the barcode on the tickets. “Delhi Capitals have communicated to us that it was a technical issue. Sometimes the scanner fails to read the barcode,” Sharma said, rejecting the suggestion of fraud.

The conflicting versions have brought focus on the robustness of ticket verification systems used during high-profile sporting events. While Verma has raised the issue as a case of fraud involving unauthorised access, DDCA officials have maintained that it was an isolated glitch without any larger implications. The complaint has been formally submitted to the police, and it remains to be seen whether an investigation will be initiated to verify the claims. If proven, the allegations could have serious implications for stadium security and ticketing protocols. For now, the incident has triggered a debate within the cricket administration over accountability and transparency in managing access to one of the country’s busiest cricket venues.
