Cluster Warheads Escalate Israel–Iran Conflict

Israeli military officials have claimed that Iran has launched ballistic missiles armed with cluster munitions toward Israeli territory, signalling a dangerous new phase in the confrontation. According to the Israel Defense Forces, certain Iranian warheads are capable of dispersing up to 80 submunitions mid-air, scattering explosives over a broad radius instead of striking a single target.

Cluster munitions are widely regarded as among the most contentious weapons in modern warfare. Their ability to blanket large areas increases the immediate destructive footprint while also leaving behind unexploded ordnance that can remain lethal for years. Military analysts warn that their reported introduction into the conflict significantly alters the risk profile, particularly for civilian populations in densely populated zones.

Questions Over Iran’s Expanding Arsenal

The development of such advanced missile capabilities has triggered debate within Israeli strategic circles. Despite years of covert operations targeting Iranian defence scientists and infrastructure, Tehran appears to have sustained — and in some areas expanded — its weapons development programmes. Israeli experts have speculated about possible foreign technical assistance, with attention turning toward potential knowledge transfers from Moscow or Beijing, though no direct evidence has been publicly presented.

First-Ever F-35 Air-to-Air Kill

In a separate dramatic development, the Israel Defense Forces announced that an Israeli Air Force F-35 fighter jet shot down a Russian-made Yak-130 operated by Iran over Tehran. The incident marks the first recorded air-to-air kill by an F-35 globally and the first engagement between Israeli forces and a manned enemy aircraft in nearly four decades.

The escalation follows the reported killing of Ali Khamenei in joint US-Israeli strikes, an event that has sharply intensified hostilities and pushed the region into uncharted territory.
