Major blow to Chhattisgarh’s folk art: Padma Vibhushan Pandvani singer Dr. Teejan Bai passes away; mourning in the art world.

Raipur: Sad news has emerged from the art world of Chhattisgarh this morning. Renowned Pandwani singer and Padma Vibhushan awardee Dr. Teejan Bai has passed away. She had been ailing for a long time. She breathed her last at AIIMS, Raipur, around 3:15 AM on Sunday.

She brought global recognition to the folk art of Chhattisgarh and the tradition of Pandwani singing. Through her powerful voice, acting, and impressive stage presence, she brought the tales of the Mahabharata to life. Her art captivated audiences not only in India but also across Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Australia. Her efforts earned special acclaim for Chhattisgarh’s folk culture on the international stage.

Honored with the Nation’s Highest Awards

In recognition of her unparalleled contribution to Indian folk art, the Government of India honored her with the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2003, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2019. Additionally, she received numerous national and international accolades, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Nritya Shiromani, and Kala Shiromani. Various universities also conferred upon her the honorary degree of D.Litt. (Doctorate).

An Irreparable Loss to the World of Folk Art

The passing of Dr. Teejan Bai is considered an irreparable loss to Chhattisgarh’s cultural heritage. Through her extraordinary talent and tireless dedication, she elevated Pandwani from village gatherings to the global stage. With her departure, the world of folk art has lost a shining star.
