CG MBBS Internship: Major change in MBBS internship rules in Chhattisgarh; students exceeding the fixed seat limit will not be granted permission.

MBBS Internship Rules: The Ayush and Health Sciences University has taken a major and strict decision regarding MBBS seats and internships in the state’s medical colleges. Under the new rules, the number of students allowed to undertake internships at a medical college will be strictly limited to the number of sanctioned MBBS seats at that institution. No college will be permitted to accommodate students for internships beyond its prescribed capacity.

This decision makes it clear that a student who has pursued their studies at other government or private colleges—such as those in Ambikapur, Bilaspur, Raigarh, or Jagdalpur—will not be able to transfer to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (Raipur) by leveraging influence or connections. This move by the university is expected to resolve the recurring disputes and administrative headaches that have plagued medical colleges.

Curbing the ‘Raipur Fixation’ of the Influential

After completing the four-and-a-half-year MBBS course, students are required to undergo a mandatory one-year internship. For this, they receive a monthly stipend exceeding ₹15,000.

MBBS Seat Limit: ₹25 Lakh Penalty

Upon completing the one-year internship, doctors are required to fulfill a two-year bond service (mandatory service in rural areas), which carries a monthly honorarium of approximately ₹50,000. Previously, bond postings were restricted to district hospitals and Community Health Centres (CHCs), where doctors served as Medical Officers. Now, postings are also available in medical colleges, where they are designated as ‘Junior Residents.’ A penalty ranging from ₹20 lakh to ₹25 lakh is stipulated for doctors who violate the rules or fail to fulfill the bond service obligation.

Medical Students News: Why were new MBBS internship rules introduced in Chhattisgarh, and what will be the impact?

For a long time, the issue of accommodating students beyond sanctioned capacity for MBBS internships has persisted in the state’s medical colleges. Students from other government and private medical colleges frequently sought transfers to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Raipur to complete their internships. This placed an additional burden on colleges and disrupted internship arrangements.

To address this issue, the AYUSH and Health Sciences University has issued clear directives stating that each medical college will be permitted to offer internships to a number of students equal only to its sanctioned MBBS seats. In other words, no college will be allowed to accommodate interns beyond its prescribed capacity.
