Rain alert across the country: Heavy rainfall warning for 18 states; will Delhi get wet today too?

New Delhi: Several states are witnessing record-breaking rainfall due to the monsoon. Water levels in rivers have risen across multiple states; landslides are occurring in some areas, while roads have turned into waterlogged stretches resembling seas, leading to loss of life. Rain-related fatalities have been reported in areas ranging from Delhi to Ghaziabad and Bulandshahr. Amidst this, heavy rainfall is expected to continue in several states today. The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for 18 states, with a ‘Red Alert’ for rain in several districts of Uttarakhand, where residents have been urged to stay indoors. According to the department, rainfall is likely in at least 18 states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra.

Rain Continues in Delhi-NCR

In Delhi, temperatures have dropped due to the rainfall over the past few days. Waterlogging is also being observed in several parts of the Delhi-NCR region. Several people have lost their lives in separate rain-related incidents in Delhi. The Meteorological Department has forecast rain in various parts of Delhi-NCR today as well. Weather experts attribute the continuous rainfall over the last two days to the northward shift of a monsoon weather system from Central India towards the Himalayan foothills. They stated that widespread rain is likely to continue in Delhi until this system moves further north; dry weather is expected in the city starting July 12.

Rain Alert Across UP

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow, very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely in districts including Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Amroha, Moradabad, Rampur, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Sambhal, and Badaun. Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rainfall has been forecast for several other districts in western and central Uttar Pradesh. The weather office stated that widespread rainfall is expected across the state until July 11, with temperatures likely to drop by 2–4 degrees Celsius over the next two to three days.

The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain warning for Lucknow and surrounding areas. The IMD reported that monsoon activity has intensified due to a low-pressure system over northwest Madhya Pradesh and an associated cyclonic circulation; this system is expected to move north-northeastwards over the next 24 hours, bringing rain across Uttar Pradesh. The department has advised residents in districts under ‘Red and Orange Alerts’ to remain vigilant, as intense rainfall could lead to waterlogging and traffic disruptions. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also likely in several parts of the state.

Orange Alert for Rain in Uttarakhand

The IMD issued an orange alert for Uttarakhand on Friday. According to the India Meteorological Department, the region will generally remain cloudy. Rain or thundershowers are likely at some places. The department has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days. Regarding recent rainfall, Jakholi recorded the highest precipitation at 46 mm, followed by 23 mm in Ukhimath and 20 mm at the Rudraprayag district headquarters.

Alert for Bihar and Jharkhand

The Meteorological Department has issued rainfall alerts for several districts in Bihar. Alerts for heavy rain have been issued for Saran, Siwan, Munger, Bhojpur, Katihar, Gaya, Saharsa, Kishanganj, Supaul, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, and West Champaran. Strong winds may also occur during this period. Additionally, rainfall alerts have been issued for several districts in Jharkhand.

Rain Alert for Himachal Pradesh

The Meteorological Department has issued a fresh rainfall alert for several districts in Himachal Pradesh. According to the department, light to moderate rainfall is likely at most places across Bilaspur, Kinnaur, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Mandi, Sirmaur, Solan, and Shimla. Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur at one or two places in Sirmaur, and heavy rainfall is expected in some areas of Solan and Shimla. In view of the heavy rainfall, a holiday has been declared for all government and private educational institutions in Solan and Sirmaur districts on Friday; however, this order applies only to students, while teaching and non-teaching staff are exempted. The Meteorological Department has urged people to stay away from rivers, streams, ravines, and landslide-prone areas during the inclement weather and has advised against unnecessary travel.

Orange Alert for Several Districts of Arunachal Pradesh

Regarding Arunachal Pradesh, the Meteorological Department stated that rainfall is expected to subside starting Friday. An ‘Orange’ alert has been issued for Papum Pare, Lower Dibang Valley, and Tirap districts for Friday. The IMD noted that weather conditions are likely to improve further by the weekend, and no warnings will be issued for most parts of the state by Saturday. However, the IMD added that a ‘Yellow’ alert (indicating a need to stay alert) for thunderstorms and heavy rainfall is likely to remain in effect for the eastern and foothill districts until Monday.
