The IMD predicts significant rainfall across parts of central, eastern, and northeastern India in the coming days; meanwhile, a ‘Red Alert’ for heavy rainfall has been issued for widespread areas across Delhi, Haryana, and Chandigarh for August 22.

Why is the monsoon so active?
On August 21, a low-pressure area persisted over northeastern Madhya Pradesh and adjoining regions, with an associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 4.5 km above mean sea level. The monsoon trough (an elongated low-pressure belt that helps organize monsoon rainfall) was moving towards the northeastern Bay of Bengal from a low-pressure area, passing through Amritsar, Muzaffarnagar, and Kanpur. These systems are helping to keep the monsoon active across central and northern India.
