Monsoon Rain Alert: The monsoon has been sluggish over the past few days, but before its withdrawal, it is set to drench several states once again. Weather conditions are expected to change from Uttar Pradesh to Bihar and Jharkhand starting September 11. Rain is forecast for 18 states today. According to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall is likely to commence today due to a low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal. The monsoon’s lull had led to rising heat in several states, but a fresh spell of rain could bring relief from the humid conditions. Temperatures had crossed the 38°C mark in many states; however, the weather department states that the monsoon is poised for a final spell of rainfall before withdrawing.
Rainfall Forecast for Today
Heavy Rain: Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh.
Moderate Rain: Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh.
Rain Expected Again in UP and Bihar
The weather department has forecast rain for Uttar Pradesh and Bihar today. Continuous rainfall in 26 districts of UP has created flood-like conditions. Rain is likely in several districts, including Prayagraj, Varanasi, Mirzapur, and Sonbhadra; an alert has been issued for low-lying areas as the Ganges River is in spate. Unnao has been the most affected district in the last 24 hours, with several villages grappling with floods. Meanwhile, rain is also expected in Bihar, where 14 districts are currently affected by floods. The weather department has predicted good rainfall in Bihar today as well.
Low-Pressure Area Over the Bay of Bengal
A low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal is creating conditions for good rainfall over the next two days. The weather department has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for heavy rain in Odisha and Chhattisgarh today, while a ‘Yellow Alert’ remains in effect for West Bengal and Jharkhand. According to the Meteorological Department, winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 km/h are also likely in some areas during this period. Currently, there is a strong possibility of rainfall.
Weather to Change in Delhi-NCR
The weather is set to change in Delhi-NCR as well. Due to a lack of rain over the past week, the impact of humid heat has intensified in Delhi; temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius have made the humidity more palpable. However, the Delhi Meteorological Department notes that light mist is currently visible in the morning. Consequently, light to moderate rainfall is expected in the Delhi-NCR region over the next few days.
Rainfall Deficit Across the Country
According to the latest report from the India Meteorological Department, rainfall recorded between June 1 and September 9—during this year’s Southwest Monsoon season—was 15 percent below average. The most significant rainfall deficit was recorded in the southern peninsular region of India, where rainfall was 27 percent below average.
