Monsoon Alert: Heavy rain in Delhi-NCR; IMD issues heavy rainfall alert for 12 states, including UP and Bihar.

New Delhi: The Meteorological Department has issued a rainfall alert for several states across the country for July 17. Several areas in Delhi-NCR received rain on Friday morning, bringing residents relief from the sweltering, humid heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast good rainfall over the next 10 to 15 hours across 12 states, including UP, Bihar, Odisha, and West Bengal. Along with the rain, winds could reach speeds of up to 60 km/h in some areas. The monsoon is reviving due to a low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal. Good rainfall is also expected in the northeastern states on Friday, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue an alert.

Monsoon likely to revive from Friday

Based on the low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal, the Meteorological Department predicts that the monsoon could gradually revive starting Friday, July 17. The lack of rainfall had been a growing concern for both the general public and farmers, as crops were at risk of damage. The next 12 to 15 hours could be crucial for several states. While the monsoon has been subdued in the northwest, good rainfall is occurring in the eastern and hilly states. The Meteorological Department has also forecast rain for Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh; a special warning has been issued for residents in these regions, advising them to stay in safe locations during adverse weather conditions.

Rain expected in UP, Bihar, and other regions

The India Meteorological Department has forecast good rainfall on Friday for UP, Bihar, Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. The monsoon has returned to Madhya Pradesh, with several districts receiving rain on Thursday evening. Strong winds reaching speeds of 70 km/h may occur during this period. Rain is also likely in Bihar and UP. Prior to this, people had been grappling with sweltering, humid heat due to the absence of rainfall. Temperatures have risen above 35 degrees Celsius in several states.

Rainfall would bring relief from the heat. In the Delhi-NCR region, people are facing increased discomfort due to humid heat; while temperatures have risen, the lack of moisture-absorbing capacity in the air means sweat does not evaporate quickly, thereby intensifying the heat.

Low-pressure system forming in the Bay of Bengal

The impact of a low-pressure system forming in the Bay of Bengal has begun to show in these states, raising the likelihood of good rainfall in the coming hours. Rainfall activity is expected to increase due to this low-pressure system, which has developed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjacent coasts of northern Odisha and West Bengal. According to the Meteorological Department, several regions—including Northwest India, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Central India—could receive good rainfall over the next seven days. Monsoon rainfall had stalled after the first week of July.
