At least 20 people have died and more than 100 are missing following flash floods in Afghanistan. Yusuf Hammad, a spokesperson for the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority, stated that the floods struck the eastern province of Nuristan, and search and rescue operations are underway to locate the missing individuals. He said, “We appeal to all citizens to stay away from flood-prone and high-risk areas.” Hammad added, “Unfortunately, severe flooding today in Parun city and several other areas of Nuristan province has caused significant loss of life and property among our fellow citizens.” He further noted that the floods have caused extensive damage to homes, agricultural land, and public infrastructure.
What is causing the severe flooding?
Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to extreme weather events. There is a constant risk of flash floods caused by snowfall and heavy rainfall. Such incidents often result in dozens or even hundreds of fatalities at once. In the spring of 2024, flash floods claimed more than 300 lives. Earlier this year, at least 110 people died due to widespread flooding and landslides in various parts of the country.
Decades of conflict, poor infrastructure, a weak economy, deforestation, and the escalating impact of climate change have exacerbated the consequences of such disasters. This is particularly true in remote areas, where many homes are constructed from mud and offer little protection against flash floods or heavy snowfall. Government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said, “We are saddened to learn of the loss of life and property caused by the floods in Nuristan province. We pray for those who lost their lives in this incident and wish the injured a speedy recovery.” Forecast of Heavy Rain
The Meteorological Department under the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has reported that 10 of the country’s 34 provinces are likely to face worsening weather conditions. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds carrying dust and sand, and flash floods are forecast for these regions. The Ministry has warned the public to stay away from riverbanks and areas prone to flooding.
