Rajasthan News: A farmer recovered the money he had buried in his field’s soil to protect it from thieves, but he paid a heavy price for it. Mangilal Meghwal, a farmer from the Pachpadra area of Balotra district, had buried lakhs of rupees—proceeds from the sale of a plot—in a polythene bag within his field. He later forgot the exact location, and despite an extensive search, the bag containing five lakh rupees remained unfound.
During the rainy season, while the field was being tilled, the bag suddenly appeared in the soil. When the farmer retrieved it, he was shocked by the condition of the money; termites had devoured approximately 75 percent of the cash. A large quantity of the banknotes had disintegrated and turned into soil, with only small fragments remaining of many notes. The very money he had hidden in the field, believing it to be safe from thieves, had been ruined while lying underground. This is believed to be the first such case in Rajasthan.
According to the farmer, he had hidden the money from the plot sale in his field rather than a bank to keep it safe from thieves. He had placed the cash in a polythene bag and buried it, but subsequently forgot the spot. Although he searched extensively, he could not locate the bag. When ploughing began after the rains, the buried bag suddenly surfaced. The farmer had hoped to recover his money intact, but the scene revealed upon opening the bag was far from his expectations; a significant portion of the money—earned through hard work and the land deal—had been destroyed by termites.
Following the incident, photographs of the torn notes and damaged currency found in the field have emerged. The poor condition of the banknotes in these images tells the story of the entire ordeal. For the farmer, receiving this money brought immense distress rather than relief, as nearly three-quarters of the cash—which he had hidden to protect it from thieves—had been destroyed before it even reached his hands. This incident highlights the farmer’s anguish, illustrating how his attempt to keep the money safe ultimately resulted in a massive loss.
